She obtained her Juris Doctor from the Faculty of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 1992. Joan then relocated with her family to Richmond, British Columbia to article with the law firm of Campbell Froh May and Rice. After articles, Joan joined the Surrey law firm of Watchorn and McLellan, where she successfully established a family law practice before venturing out to practice family law in Langley on her own, or in partnership with other family law lawyers. During this time, she also practiced extensively in the area of residential and commercial conveyancing and lending transactions having established strong working relationships with local realtors, financial institutions, and mortgage brokers.

While practicing as a sole practitioner in Langley, Joan oversaw articles for 3 articling students, and actively participated in the Family Law Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch).

In addition to Provincial and Supreme Court practice, Joan has increasing experience in appeal work both before the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Every family law case is unique in terms of the issues, the participants’ readiness to deal with those issues, and the resources available to resolve the family law issues. Joan’s practical approach to family law problem solving balances the financial and emotional costs of the process to the parties and their children, and the benefits of a litigated versus a negotiated settlement, achieving the best possible result for her clients.
